This is not a tutorial about how to make a pixel doll. In this article I intend to show how to use tutorials to help a doller learn how to make dolls. But I'll tell you right now: there is no magic trick or fancy program that will teach you how to become a super awesome pixel or tool doller overnight. Every awesome doller has had to learn the hard way: practice, practice and more practice. You draw because you can't stop. That is how you learn. Are you not interested in hard work? Then don't get frustrated making intricate pixel dolls.

Male Pixel or Tool Dolls

Making digital dolls seems to be about making pretty or horrific girls and/or women. Judging by how few dollers make mandolls it seems the unfashionable thing to do. But I'd like to take this opportunity to spread some love for the guys.

Dollmakers, a short-short overview

Internet access has brought many different cultures in our homes. Through different sites we see differences as well as the common ground. Take pixeldolls for instance. When The Palace start out with simple pixel dolls in limited colours, they took their appearance from westerm cartoon figures. When the Asian world introduced avatar chat sites, they came up with detailed and colourful little dolls in perfect pixel style. And from there, the dollmaker and dress up scene evolved even further.

For me dolling is interwoven with dollmakers. The first I saw dolls, the early preps and then uniques, were all offered in dollmaker. The creator of the parts gave you the chance to create your own doll. Or someone went to The Palace Chat rooms and collected free 'props' to make their dollmakers. Credit was not often goven to the right person. But we were young and free, it was like the 60s of the dolling era... People just enjoyed what they could do with it.

Dating the doller

Five, a 20something English guy living in Amsterdam, The Netherlands with Daenelia, Doller. Daenelia has been dolling for around 8 years or so. Maybe longer. Five and Dae have been Five and Dae for almost as long. Dae interviewed Five on IRC, because she did not want to write his responses. Yes, he was sitting right next to her at the time.

[20:11] <Five> I know how much dolling means to you, it wouldn't be right to come in between you and something you love so much
[20:13] <Daenerys> I also remember that one time you made me a dollmaker. It may not have been a real pixel doll, but it took a lot of time and effort and you even got me to give you the javascript without telling me what you were making. Did you ever think of taking up a form of dolling yourself or was that just one project?
