  • Ninique has made a wonderful dollmaker, where you can add your own props very easily. Though I'd recommend not uploading dozens of recolours of the same top (...) it is a great way to contribute to a dollmaker. I added a few props as well!

  • Over at Pixistar.com you will find a massive base search engine. You can create your own profile and upload your own bases and set your own rules, with a permanent credit link. Come check it out.

  • A new dolling magazine started a while ago. It has lots of info for both new and veteran dollers, so go check it out. PxT Magazine also has a deviantART account.

About Dolling

A doll or dollz is a digitally drawn human or humanoid figure. They have been known as pixeldolls, e-dolls and just plain dollz. Most dolls are a collaborative work with one person making a base body and another drawing clothes.

The term derives from old dress-up dolls, as dolls start out as bare bodies and are dressed. Though most dolls are represented as a single image with a transparent background, some dolls and baseless dolls come closer to being a digital mini-painting.

Dolling is a very accessible hobby, as there are many levels of skill allowed. The dolling community is pretty wide and takes in many different types of dollers.

Drag and drop dollmakers were among the first to offer an easy way to create a doll without having to draw. Though it is great fun, dolls made in a dollmaker are not on the same level as handdrawn digital dolls. Dolls made in someone else's dollmaker should always be linked back to the original maker.

Drag and drop dollmakers came about around the same time as Kisekae Set System (KiSS). Recently flash based dress up games with larger doll-figures have been appearing online. Most of these are based on celebrities and attract a large grup of young girls.

I have not uploaded the dollmakers yet. But I asked on many polls if guests want to see the dollmakers again and you all do. So I will be uploading dollmakers again soon.

But I think it is important that people who use dollmakers know what kind of work is involved in making one doll, let alone all the parts of a dollmaker. And I like to challenge them to make their own handdrawn dolls. Playing around with a dollmaker is fun, but not as satisfying as drawing your own pixel dollz.

On the right you will see a link to a tutorial lesson Pyrochan made about drawing your own dolls. No one expects you to be as good as her immediately, but anyone can start and learn how to make their own dolls by drawing them. Anyone can draw, anyone can develop a style. Even if no one else likes it, you can have fun drawing things for yourself. I really hope that even if you came for drag and drop dollmakers you will open up Paint and start drawing your own. Good luck!
